7 Mistakes That Are Killing Your Scented Candle

7 Mistakes That Are Killing Your Scented Candle

Most candle problems are user problems. The candle is usually fine.

1. You didn't let the first burn finish.

The melt pool on the first burn needs to reach the vessel's edge. If it doesn't, the wax remembers that boundary, and tunnels straight down the centre every burn after, leaving good wax permanently attached to the sides. Two to three hours on the first light, minimum.

2. You haven't trimmed the wick since you bought it.

Trim before every burn. Not once at the start, every time. An untrimmed wick creates a large flame that burns hot, produces soot, and eats through the wax too fast. 6-7mm maximum, every single time.

3. You're burning it too long.

Four hours is the limit. Beyond that, the wick destabilises, the vessel overheats, and the fragrance oil in the melt pool degrades. Two two-hour sessions outperform one four-hour session on every measure.

4. You're burning it in a draught.

An AC vent hitting the flame causes one side to burn faster than the other, asymmetrical melt pool, uneven wax walls, a wick that migrates off-centre. Move the candle out of the direct airflow.

5. You're moving it before the wax has set.

Liquid wax moves. A candle picked up before it has fully solidified, usually two hours after extinguishing, cools unevenly. Lumpy surface, tilted wick, difficult to relight cleanly. Leave it where it is.

6. You're burning it down to nothing.

Stop at 1cm. The base overheats when the wax gets that low, enough to crack glass and damage the surface underneath. Scoop the remaining wax when cool, clean the vessel, give it a second life.

7. You're judging a candle by how it smells in the shop.

Cold scent throw tells you about fragrance concentration, not about how the candle performs when burning. Some candles are formulated to smell maximum cold and fade when burning. The metric that matters is how it smells after an hour of burning, not on first encounter in the store.

A good scented candle should smell better as it burns, not worse.
