In a wardrobe context, the organic material being metabolised is your clothing. The moisture that enables the process comes from humid air. A well-maintained wardrobe in January in any Indian city will smell fine. Wooden wardrobes and almirahs

Wood is hygroscopic. It absorbs and releases moisture as ambient humidity changes. An old wooden almirah in a Mumbai flat is, during the monsoon, itself a source of moisture as well as a vessel for it. The wood swells slightly, doors may stick, and the interior humidity can be higher than the room humidity because the wood continues to release moisture it absorbed during the previous rainy season.

Wooden wardrobes also have more surface area for mould to colonise: the back panel, the shelf undersides, the corners where air circulates least. The mustiness in a wooden almirah is often the wardrobe itself, not just the clothes.

For wooden wardrobes, the cleaning protocol matters more: the interior surfaces need to be treated before the monsoon begins, and again if mustiness develops. The silica gel load needs to be higher. Ventilation is more important. An old wooden almirah with good airflow and adequate silica gel will perform better than a sealed one with no moisture management.

Steel wardrobes

Steel does not absorb moisture. The metal stays cooler than the ambient temperature, particularly in air-conditioned rooms, which means condensation can form on the interior steel surfaces. You may find droplets or damp patches on the back wall of a steel wardrobe during the monsoon. This condensation then drips onto shelves, wets folded clothes at the back of the shelf, and creates localised mould patches.

The Fix: A Layered Approach

Musty wardrobe odour during the Indian monsoon has two components: excess moisture, and the microbial activity that moisture enables. Fragrance alone addresses neither. Desiccant alone addresses moisture but does nothing for the olfactory environment. The solution that works is both, applied in the right order and in the right quantity.

Layer 1: Desiccant

Silica gel is the correct desiccant for wardrobe use. It absorbs moisture from enclosed air and holds it until recharged or replaced. It has no adverse effects on textiles, no scent that would interfere with fragrance, and it is effective at the humidity levels typical of an Indian monsoon.

For a standard double-door wardrobe, four to six 100g silica gel packets are a reasonable starting quantity. Distribute them at different height levels rather than placing all of them on one shelf. The gel absorbs moisture from the air within approximately a one-metre radius; multiple packets at different heights create more even coverage.

Silica gel that contains a colour indicator (typically blue that turns pink when saturated) makes it easy to know when recharging is needed. Recharging is simple: place the packets in sunlight for a day, or in an oven at 100 to 120 degrees Celsius for two hours. They return to full effectiveness and can be used indefinitely.

During peak monsoon (July and August in most of India), check the colour indicator once a week. In a humid coastal city, you may find the gel saturates in two to three weeks. In an interior city, it may last a month. Recharge or replace before saturation; gel that is already saturated provides no protection.

Layer 2: Fragrance

Once moisture is managed, fragrance becomes effective. Passive fragrance diffusion in a wardrobe, through fragrance tablets or cedar, works on the principle of slow, continuous scent release into the enclosed air of the wardrobe. If the wardrobe air is humid and carrying active mould VOCs, the fragrance is working against a strong and ongoing source of odour. Silica gel reduces or eliminates that source. The fragrance then maintains the olfactory standard rather than fighting it.

Fragrance tablets designed for wardrobe use are preferable to air fresheners or room sprays. The passive diffusion format means continuous, low-level scent release over weeks or months rather than an immediate hit that fades in hours. Cedar is worth including alongside fragrance tablets if you store wool, cashmere, or any natural fibre susceptible to moth damage. Cedar's deterrent effect on moths is a genuine, well-documented phenomenon, though it diminishes as the wood dries out (which is why cedar hangers should be lightly sanded every couple of seasons to expose fresh wood). The combination of silica gel for moisture control, cedar for moth deterrence, and fragrance tablets for ambient scent is the full stack.

What Doesn't Work: Spraying Perfume Inside the Wardrobe

This is probably the most common household response to musty wardrobe odour, and it is worth addressing directly because it feels intuitive and fails completely.

Perfume sprayed inside a wardrobe does four things, none of which address the problem. First, it deposits alcohol and fragrance compounds on the nearest surfaces (the inside of the door, the front of folded clothes). Second, it provides a brief olfactory mask that fades in minutes to hours. Third, in a humid wardrobe, the alcohol in the perfume accelerates moisture absorption by the fabric it lands on. Fourth, if the perfume deposits on silk or acetate, it can cause permanent staining.

Treating a Wardrobe That Already Smells Musty

If the mustiness has already developed, the sequence is: remove, clean, neutralise, dry, then introduce desiccant and fragrance.

Remove everything from the wardrobe. Do not skip this step; cleaning around stored clothes will not reach the areas where mould is actually growing.

Clean all interior surfaces with a one-to-one solution of white vinegar and water. White vinegar at this concentration kills most mould and bacteria responsible for musty odour without damaging wardrobe surfaces. Pay particular attention to corners, shelf undersides, and the back panel. For wooden wardrobes, do not saturate the wood; use a damp cloth rather than a soaking one.

After cleaning, leave the wardrobe open with a fan directed at the interior for several hours. If it is a dry day (in the monsoon, these are rare but occur), this is the ideal moment for this step. If you have an air-conditioned room, run the AC while the wardrobe is open; the dehumidified air will dry the interior faster.

Before returning clothes, place a bowl of activated charcoal or fresh coffee grounds in the wardrobe for 48 to 72 hours. Both are effective odour absorbers for residual mustiness. Then introduce the silica gel and fragrance tablets, and return the clothes.

Silk, wool, and dry-clean-only fabrics should be aired in filtered sunlight for a day or two; strong direct sunlight can fade some fabrics, so morning or evening light is safer. Pre-Monsoon and Post-Monsoon Maintenance

The most effective approach to the musty wardrobe problem is not reactive, it is scheduled. Two sessions per year, each taking two to three hours, will prevent the problem from developing rather than correcting it after it has.

April to May (pre-monsoon preparation)

Before the first rains arrive, empty the wardrobe completely. Air all garments in morning sunlight for two to three hours. Wipe down the wardrobe interior. Check for any signs of the previous season's mould (small dark patches, particularly in corners) and treat with vinegar solution. Introduce fresh silica gel, fresh cedar if you use it, and fresh fragrance tablets. Return clothes.
